Salome Higgins: Mr. Liechti, thank you so much for taking the time today. Your new course “ETH Math & Science Prep Track” is starting in January 2025. Could you give us an overview of the program and what participants can expect?
Marcel Liechti: With pleasure, Ms. Higgins. The “ETH Math & Science Prep Track” is a 9-month intensive ETH preparation course designed specifically for future students in mathematics, physics, engineering, and other natural sciences. The course focuses on preparing participants for the challenging first semesters at ETH Zurich, the University of Zurich (UZH), and EPFL in Lausanne. We concentrate on the math-heavy subjects that are often considered the most difficult for students starting their studies.
Salome Higgins: This sounds like a fantastic opportunity for students. What sets your course apart from others?
Marcel Liechti: Our course goes far beyond traditional knowledge transfer. We prepare students intensively for the challenges of their first semester by covering the entire syllabus ahead of time. This gives them a strong advantage—they not only understand the material, but they also learn how to apply it efficiently. We are particularly proud of the two ETH-level exams we’ve integrated into the course. Additionally, we provide personalized support through online tools like iPads and GoodNotes, so we can address each student’s individual needs without wasting time on generic group discussions.
Salome Higgins: Which subjects and topics are the main focus in the course?
Marcel Liechti: We cover essential foundation subjects such as Analysis 1 and 2, Linear Algebra, Physics, Discrete Mathematics, Algorithms, and Engineering Mechanics. A unique feature of our course is our focus on Proof Theory, a topic we’ve specially developed for this program. It’s also included in our new book, “Exam Training in Analysis Volume 1,” which is crucial for mastering higher-level material. All course materials are based on real ETH and UZH exams and are supplemented by our Springer-Verlag books.
Salome Higgins: There are many reports that the first semester at ETH is particularly tough for students. How does your course help participants overcome these hurdles?
Marcel Liechti: The first semester at ETH, UZH, and EPFL is notoriously difficult, especially in math-heavy subjects. Our ETH preparation course not only prepares students academically but also helps them mentally. We teach time management, stress management, and effective learning strategies. Thanks to our program, participants will experience a much smoother start to their studies and won’t be overwhelmed by the high demands.
Salome Higgins: What do you expect from the participants in your course?
Marcel Liechti: We expect participants to be motivated and ready to work hard. The course is intensive, and it takes discipline to unlock its full potential. We estimate about 12 hours of independent study per week in addition to the two weekly one-on-one online lessons via Zoom. But with commitment, the rewards are huge!
Salome Higgins: You also mentioned that your course offers psychological support. Could you elaborate on that?
Marcel Liechti: Of course. The academic pressure at ETH is very high, and many students experience stress or self-doubt early on. That’s why we offer not only academic support but also psychological guidance. We help participants develop coping strategies for stress and teach them how to approach complex problems without panic. Building confidence is crucial for success, and we focus heavily on that.
Salome Higgins: With over 30 years of experience in math coaching, you must have seen many success stories. What is the secret to your students’ success?
Marcel Liechti: Perseverance and trust in our method are key. We follow the Pareto Principle, focusing on the most exam-relevant topics, which allows students to improve their performance significantly. Our tailored ETH exam preparation has proven extremely effective. For example, at UZH, we currently have a 93% success rate in math, which speaks volumes about our approach.
Salome Higgins: Is there a particular highlight or method that you’re especially proud of?
Marcel Liechti: Yes, our approach of pre-working the entire first-semester curriculum is one of our greatest strengths. We know the course material inside out and can predict which problems will likely appear on the exams. This gives our participants a significant advantage, boosting their confidence right from the start. This strategy has been tried and tested repeatedly, and it gives students the security they need to thrive.
Salome Higgins: What does a typical day in the “ETH Math & Science Prep Track” look like for participants?
Marcel Liechti: We offer two online lessons per week, each lasting two hours. These are supplemented with intensive self-study. There are also practical exercises and regular exams to track progress. It’s important to us that we continuously monitor each participant’s development and provide personalized feedback so they can focus on their strengths and address their weaknesses.
Salome Higgins: How many participants do you accept per course, and how is the support structured?
Marcel Liechti: We deliberately limit the number of participants to 20 to ensure that we can provide personalized attention. Small groups allow us to address the individual needs of each student. Each participant receives the support they need to achieve their goals and succeed at their exams.
Salome Higgins: How can interested students apply for the course?
Marcel Liechti: The application process is straightforward. Interested students can sign up through our website, where they’ll find all the details about the course content and schedule. We recommend applying early, as places fill up quickly. Students can also join up to six weeks after the course starts, but it will be more intensive for them to catch up.
Salome Higgins: What is your most important piece of advice for future participants to make the most of the course?
Marcel Liechti: Take every opportunity to ask questions and work through the exercises. Staying active and engaged is crucial in this course. We give you the tools you need for success—the key is in applying them!
Salome Higgins: Mr. Liechti, thank you for this inspiring conversation. Finally, what would you like to say to future participants?
Marcel Liechti: Be bold, invest in your future, and take advantage of this unique opportunity! The “ETH Math & Science Prep Track” is an excellent chance to master the challenges of the first semester and start your studies with confidence. We’re excited to support you on this journey!
Salome Higgins: Thank you, Mr. Liechti! I wish you great success with this exciting new program.
Marcel Liechti: Thank you, Ms. Higgins. It was a pleasure.
